Wildlife & Caves

Saturday, May 9
🌧️
High 54°F / Low 43°F
Light rain anticipated (25-35%).
Rain-friendly itinerary: wildlife drive from the car + underground cave tour.
  • ~7:30 AM · Morning Safari
Wildlife Loop Road — An 18-mile scenic drive through Custer State Park's open prairies, home to one of the largest publicly-owned bison herds in the world (~1,400 animals).
    • Bison: Often seen roaming across the prairie or blocking the road ("bison jams"). Stay in the car and enjoy the show — they move at their own pace.
    • Burros: Wild donkeys often approach cars, especially on the southeastern section. Do not feed them — it's against park rules.
    • Also look for: Pronghorn antelope, elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, and birds of prey.
    • Stop at the Custer State Park Visitor Center (east entrance) to check where herds were recently spotted.
🧸 Kid Tip: Roll down the windows slightly when driving through the burro herds—they are very curious! The Visitor Center has great tactile exhibits of animal furs he can touch.
⏱ Allow 1.5–2+ hours · Dawn is best for wildlife, but rainy mornings are also excellent — animals are active in cool weather
⚠️ Stay inside your vehicle near large animals. Maintain 100+ yards distance if on foot. Never approach wildlife.
    📍 Loop Start
  • ~11:00 AM · Cave Tour
Wind Cave National Park — "Garden of Eden" Tour — The most accessible standard guided tour. Perfect shelter from the rain.
    • Duration: 1 hour · Distance: ¼ mile · Stairs: ~150 steps
    • Enter and exit via elevator. See the cave's signature boxwork formations (honeycomb-like calcite structures found almost nowhere else on Earth), plus cave popcorn and flowstone.
    • Cave temperature: A constant 54°F year-round — bring a light jacket or sweatshirt and long pants.
    • Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip (no sandals). Cave floor can be damp and slippery.
    • No backpacks, large bags, or front/back child carriers allowed inside the cave. No food or drinks.
🧸 Kid Tip: 1 hour is usually the max tolerance for a 4-year-old underground. Prepare him by saying it's a "secret underground tunnel." Use the bathroom in the visitor center before the tour—there are none in the cave!
🎟️ Book in advance on Recreation.gov — tours sell out! If walk-up, arrive before the Visitor Center opens.
